Visiting the copper museum in Clarkdale Arizona

Copper mining has been a major industry in Arizona since the 19th century.

There are about 10 major copper mines in Arizona. A couple of hours drive north of Phoenix, Jerome was once a thriving copper town revolving around the Gold King mine on Cleopatra Hill. From 10.000 habitants in the 1920’s to less than 450 today, Jerome has now become a small quirky and artistic community. Its antique charm where art galleries and restaurants found their place amongst remnants of the old booming town attracts visitors from all over the world.

Clarkdale is a small neighboring community named after William Clark, the founder of the United Verde Mine. Although it is the home of the Verde Canyon Railroad - a lovely and relaxing train ride along the Verde Valley- it is a very quiet place that you may almost miss or ignore.

That would be a mistake because the copper museum which opened it doors in downtown Clarkdale in 2012 is definitely a place not to be missed. Believe me, museums usually bore me to death and my husband had to drag me to go there. Glad he did because I enjoyed it very much and even went to add my 5 stars review in Trip advisor.

Visiting the copper museum

Each collection (kitchenware, drinkware, war art, winery, art and architecture...) has it own room and offers pieces from both US and Europe that have been bought or donated.

The museum staff did a great work to enhance the value of each collection with extra photos and interesting facts framed at strategic points of the visit. Just follow the footprints painted on the floor to navigate from one room to the other and be sure to not miss anything. During our visit, the docent stop by a few times to ask us if we had any question. It shows how much he cares and loves his museum.

Bottom line, if you are interested into copper, this is a place to absolutely visit if you ever come in our area. I highly recommend it. FYI, they have a gift shop separate from the museum, first building when you arrive in Jerome.
